The Franklin Southampton region offers an abundance of transportation infrastructure assets, including:

Highways

I-95, a major north-south East Coast route to the west, is 28 miles from Courtland and 33 miles from Franklin. US Route 460 and US Route 58, two major east-west routes, connect Franklin-Southampton to I-64 and the Hampton Roads Region to the east and I-95 to the west. US Route 258 connects the area with US Route 17 to the north and the North Carolina state line to the south.

Rail

CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation both offer freight and piggyback rail service, opening Southampton County to all major national markets. International markets are accessible through the Hampton Roads port terminals.

Ports

Hampton Roads Harbor, largest on the East Coast, connects Franklin and Southampton County to the world. The Virginia Port Authority is the state’s leading agency for international transportation and maritime commerce. The agency owns four general cargo terminals – Norfolk International Terminals, Portsmouth Marine Terminal, Newport News Marine Terminal and the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal.

Also, the regions largest private container terminal, APM Terminals, owned by Maersk Inc. was opened in June, 2007. This new $450 million complex is on 291 acres and can handle 1 million TEU's per year.

Commercial Air Service:
Norfolk International Airport, located 55 miles away, is served by 7 major airlines (American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Trans World, United, US Airways) and 8 commuter airlines.

Newport News/ Williamsburg International Airport, located 45 miles away, is served by AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, ASA/ Delta Connection, Comair/ Delta Connection, and US Airways Express.

Richmond International Airport, located 75 miles away, is served by AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta, JetBlue Airways, Northwest Airlines, US Airways, and United.

General Aviation Service:
Franklin Municipal Airport, located in the City of Franklin on the County’s eastern border, includes a 5,000 ft paved, lighted runway.

Motor Freight Carriers

There are approximately 50 trucking companies that serve the Franklin Southampton region.
